Watatsumi is a legendary kami (god), Japanese dragon and water deity in Japanese mythology. Ōwatatsumi no kami (great deity of the sea) is believed to be another name for the sea deity Ryūjin (Dragon God) and also for the Watatsumi Sanjin (Three Watatsumi gods), which rule the upper, middle and lower seas and were created when Izanagi (one of the world-creating sibling gods) was washing himself of the dragons blood when he returned from the underworld.
